Map areas are vast and often mazelike, forcing players to waste time running through repetitive environments to reach their next event. Rogue Lords suffers most from tediousness and a lack of balance. While choices don't technically affect the plot, they do make a run more difficult or more enjoyable, making Rogue Lords feel like a game where choices matter. Rogue Lords gives players multiple response options as well, with each choice leading to a different reward or penalty. Making decisions, and using Devil Mode to cheat the odds, feels rewarding. They add an extra dimension to strategy, tasking players with choosing the right character for the job based on their traits and passive attributes, like Scariness, Stealth, Occultism, and Temptation. Story Events are by far the most enjoyable parts of Rogue Lords. These effect mechanics keep every run of Rogue Lords feeling fresh and push players to strategize. Human preparations to defeat the Devil lead to hindrances that cause negative effects on specific events. However, as the Devil's influence grows, so does the resistance of Humanity. These are called Terror Effects and can provide benefits to the player, like bonus Demonic Essence or extra skill and trait unlocks. As the Devil's influence in the New World grows, players will receive random effects on certain nights.
